ZF pursued a precrash sensing project with PreAct that could reliably predict an imminent collision, using a low-cost sensor. NHTSA and other road safety agencies have determined that the vast majority of injuries and deaths can be prevented if an imminent collision can be reliably detected only milliseconds prior to impact.
